Every year the city puts out Christmas trees on Colonial drive near my home.  To put up the trees they use a bucket crane and block off a lane of traffic.  Typically it’s done on a weekend and doesn’t cause too many traffic problems.

There is always the exception to that pattern.

They are putting the trees up today.

The Florida Classic is playing at the Florida Citrus Bowl stadium.  This is a major rivalry played every year between Bethune Cookman University and Florida A & M University.  Every year it draws big crowds.

Big crowds.  Lots of traffic.

To get to the Florida Citrus Bowl, people have to drive down Colonical Drive right where they are putting up the lights.  The pre-game show starts at 2 pm.  People always start arriving a couple of hours before the pre-game to see old friends and have a good time.

I only needed to go 11/2 blocks on Colonial Drive today and it was a mess.  It took me three times as long to get where I wanted to go then usual.  While it should have been easier to come back since I would be traveling against traffic, it was actually worse because people were turning at the light and then blocking through traffic.  When I needed to turn, through traffic was blocking the way.

At a stand still.

They put the trees up on Edgewater over a week ago.  Whoever planned this should have planned to put the trees up on Colonial first and then get streets like Edgewater.  It would have prevented making an already bad traffic day so much worse.
