The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has announced that it will be removing the bear trap from the Lake Ivanhoe in College Park.  Apparently even stale donuts couldn’t coax the bear out of hiding.

Obviously the bear is smarter or more cautious (or both) than the Fish and Wildlife people thought.

I was hoping that they would catch the bear.  No, I’m not afraid that it will hurt my dog.  I’m more concerned about what the bear may be forced to do if its food starts running short when the weather turns cold.  Like others around here, I”m more worried about the bear wandering into traffic on nearby I-4.

Bear trap in College Park to be removed

A few days ago I posted about a black bear being spotted in my neighborhood.  Unless it has been caught in the last couple of hours, the bear is still out and about.

The Fish and Wildlife Commission has set up a trap in the area where the bear was spotted.  It’s about 1/4 th of a mile from my house as the crow flies.  It’s a good bit closer to my aunt’s house.

So far the trap hasn’t caught anything, in part because there have been too many television cameras trained on the site.  They all want to get the capture of the bear on film.  They’re also all too stupid to realize that no healthy wild animal will come creeping into a trap that is lit up like a Christmas tree.

The area the bear has been spotted in is very over-grown.  It’s a tiny forest in the middle of a quiet neighborhood.  I’ll probably drive by and take a picture of the area tomorrow.

Or maybe not since I can’t track down my camera.

Bear wandering in Orlando neighborhood avoids lights, cameras and captors

Okay, this is just weird. Apparently someone saw a black bear wandering around in College Park last night.

We saw a black bear last night in my neighborhood when doing for a walk about 8:30pm. It was in the really old and nice section of the neighborhood with huge oak trees and lots of deep lots off of Lakeview. It was weird-an urban neighborhood in Orlando and a black bear was in the front yard of an old empty house for sale. I kept seeing the bear and thinking it was a statue. Finally, about 2 houses away I asked Maria if she saw it– and was it really a bear? The bear turned it’s head and looked at us. Maria agrees it was a bear and goes running after it to get a closer look! Maria chased it in the back yard of the house and it was so dark we never found it again.

From the description, that’s not all that is probably not all that far from my house.

No, I’m not worried about my safety. If it was really a bear I doubt it is still in the area. Even if it is, I imagine it would be just as afraid of me. I will keep the dog close by, though, just in case.
