An elusive lover
in the night.
In 1947 the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists created the symbolic image of the Doomsday Clock as a way to convey the dangers of nuclear weapons to the public and to governments. Since its creation the image has appeared on every publication of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists magazine.
Since its creation the hands have come as close as 2 minutes to midnight in 1953 when both the United States and the Soviet Union tested their own versions of the hydrogen bomb. At one time it reached as far away as 17 minutes in 1991 with the end of the Cold War.
Today the clock was reset for only the 18th time since 1947. Before today it was set at 7 minutes to midnight in February of 2002. It now sits at 5 minutes to midnight.
