I’ve noticed something since I had the Lasik surgery nearly 2 weeks ago. I squint. A lot.

I know I would squint whenever I had my glasses off and was trying to see something. What I didn’t realize is that I probably did the same thing when wearing my glasses. I doubt I did it as much though.

It would be one thing if I needed to squint to see something, but I’m catching myself squinting when I can see what I’m looking at just fine.

Hopefully this habit will begin to fade as I get more and more used to life without glasses.

By the way, the first movie I saw in a movie theater after the surgery was Cars. It was a great choice to initiate my “new” eyes.

I had my first check this morning after the Lasik surgery and my vision was 20/25. The person who checked it said that was excellent for the day after surgery. My doctor told me that the first day after surgery my eyesight would be 80-90% of where it would end up. So it could get better than it is right now.

I did see halos around lights when I walked the dog last night but my doctor told me that should go away in a few days to a week or so.

I’m so glad I did this! Even with glasses I couldn’t see this well!

The Lasik surgery went great and I can see!

I’m sitting here looking out the window into the backyard. I can see the leaves of the ginger lilies that are at the end of the backyard. I can clearly see the trunk of the oak tree in the side yard of the house behind ours.

It’s amazing! I’m thrilled with the results.

Okay, lets go back in time a bit and let me tell you how things went.

My aunt took me to the appointment. When we got there I handed over the agreement for the surgery that I had signed and they gave me a pair of booties for my shoes. I asked my aunt if she wanted to go in with me but she said no.

I put the booties on and then sat in the waiting room for a few minutes. An intern came and took me into an exam room. There he took a picture of me wearing my glasses and then went over the post-op care. One of the things I was given was a bag that reminded me of a makeup bag. In the bag were dark sunglasses which I would wear home, an eye shield to wear when I go to bed for the next few days, a small bottle of numbing drops, a sample box of Refresh Tears, and another bottle with drops to put in my eyes.

The intern went over everything in the bag and then asked if I’d brought the prescription of antibiotic drops. I brought that out of my purse and he explained that I would put one drop in each eye 3 times a day, wait 5 minutes, and then put a drop from the last bottle in each eye.

The next person I saw was my eye doctor. He asked how I was doing, went over the information from the pre-op, discussed the surgery that I was about to have, and then asked if I drank.

That kind of surprised me and I told him I rarely drank. He then asked how I held my liquor. I wasn’t sure where he was going but I told him that when I did drink I typically didn’t drink that much so I didn’t know. His last question was “How nervous are you?” My answer “Very.” Then he said he’d give me a good dose of Valium to help me calm down.

I took the Valium and then had to wait a while for it to take effect. I’d never had Valium before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It did calm me down but I don’t think it kept me from remembering the procedure.

As for the actual procedure, I can only tell you what I saw, heard, felt, etc. What exactly was being done I couldn’t say. I did get the DVD but I haven’t watched it. I don’t know if I will but my sister and brother both wanted to see the surgery so I got it for them.

For the procedure I laid down on a table with my head in a circle thing to keep it in place. One eye was taped closed. Several drops were put in the open eye so that I couldn’t feel anything. Then something was put in the open to keep the lid open. A machine was moved in front of my face and I was told to watch the green blinking light. For a moment my vision went dark and then I could see the light again although it was not as clear. I could tell something was brought in front of my eye and I could hear something running and a slight smell of something burning. Very slight though.

In a very short time a lot of fluid was placed in my eye and then I could see but not feel something being used to wipe my eye. A moment later I was asked to close my eye and told that that eye was done. They took the tape off my left eye, put it on the right, and then we went through the whole thing again.

My doctor had warned me that the left eye may seem worse or easier than the right. He said that would be in my head because there would be no difference between what was done with the two eyes. He was right only in that it seemed to take longer to complete the procedure on the left eye.

When I got up everything looked like it was in a fog. I was taken out to meet my aunt and we waited for the DVD. The nurse brought out the DVD, told me to come by tomorrow at 8 am so I could be checked out. I put the sunglasses on and we left.

I have to say those sunglasses look almost like racing glasses. They cover my eyes completely on the front and sides but don’t look bulky.

My aunt brought me home and I crashed for a couple of hours. When I got up I could see. It was wonderful!

My eyes felt scratchy when I first got up. I did use the numbing drops in them at that time. Right now my right eye feels a little scratchy but the left one feels fine. I’m going to see if putting the moisturizing drops in them helps instead of needing to use the numbing drops.

My appointment for my Lasik surgery is less than an hour away. I’m excited and nervous at the same time. I’m supposed to eat as usual and I was recommended to eat something before I went for the appointment. The nurse told me the Valium would make me nauseas otherwise.

Hell, I’m already nauseas. But I’ll try.

I’ve been collecting a serious of lasts over the past few days. Some of these lasts include:

The last time I had to get up and peer at the clock to see what time it was (this morning)

The last time I had to wear my glasses in a movie theater (Tuesday for The DaVinci Code)

The last time I would have to wear my glasses to drive (yesterday afternoon)

The last time I have to wear my glasses to see the person I’m talking to (coming up on that one quickly)

The last time I have to wear my glasses to see what I’m typing on my blog (right now)

The last XXXday that I have to wear my glasses (Monday, Tuesday, etc)

Well, I’ll be leaving in about 20 minutes and I need to eat something. I probably won’t be posting again until tomorrow. I’ll let you all know how it went then.

Getting ready for Thursday

I’ve got a few things I need to do tomorrow and Thursday morning so I’m all set for the Lasik surgery Thursday afternoon.

Some are things that I would probably be doing on Thursday but I don’t want to worry about them that day. Things like laundry and cleaning out the gerbils cages.

I also need to get some sunglasses. Just plain old, non-prescription sunglasses. Since I forgot to pick up the antibiotic eyedrops today, I can do both at the drugstore tomorrow.

I’m also going to change the sheets on my bed on Thursday morning. I was going to do it this past Sunday but I decided that I’d just wait so that I had completely clean sheets on the bed after the surgery.

The Miami 7

Jon Stewart on The Daily Show had a great bit about the Miami 7. Remember, these are 7 people who did drills in a warehouse but had no other jobs in order to bring in any money to carry out any plot. One claimed to be a member of al-Qaeda but wasn’t. Their leader went around in a bathrobe. Oh, and one had worked in Chicago once and may have been familiar with the Sears Tower as in he knew where it was.

Anyway, click on the clip and then pause it so it can load. Once the gray bar is completely across the bottom the clip is ready to play. Very funny stuff.
