Earlier this month the state legislature cut the current state budget by $517 million. Over 60% ($325 million) of that cut was sliced out of education. That was just for the current state budget. The legislation is still trying to work out the cuts for next year’s budget. It’s a given that education will take a huge chunk.
I saw this cartoon and felt that it told the tale very well.

There are quite a few differences between working in an elementary school and working in a high school. One day I may actually sit down and write about them all. Today I’m only writing about one difference.
I worked in various elementary schools for 13 years prior to coming to my current school. In all that time only one student at any of those schools died. The young man happened to be one of my students. He was killed in a house fire during the summer.
Sadly, it’s a much more common occurrence in high schools. Most of the time the students are involved in a car accident and speed or alcohol or both are involved.
Today we were told that a 15 year old student from my school had died over the weekend in a car crash. While the news report didn’t saw speed was a factor, I wouldn’t be surprised if it came into play. It’s just not as easy to overturn a slower moving vehicle.
He wasn’t one of my students but it is still sad to see someone’s life ended so young.

I have finally finished getting the back log of work caught up at my school. I’m tired and I’ve had a headache for a few days but it is all done. I shouldn’t need to spend any more Saturdays trying to get everything done.
Now I’ll just take a couple of days to recuperate. Or maybe a decade.

Wow! Someone at my school nominated me for Teacher of the Year.
I’m not expecting to win. I’ve only worked there for a little over 2 months. Also, being a high school, most of the teachers don’t know me yet.
Still, it is nice to be nominated.

I was awarded the Support Person of the month for October by my school.
Personally, I’m thrilled because I’ve never been honored for the work I have done at any school. It’s also a bit of an oops.
I support the teachers and students at my school but I’m not technically a member of the support staff. I’m a teacher.
Part of the confusion comes from my job description which involves “supporting” and part comes from not being in a classroom with students.
I’m still thrilled with the honor and I get a reserved parking spot for the month. I’ll definitely be using the parking spot.
