File this one under “Idiots.”
Some well known members of the right wing blogosphere are in a tizzy over a black and white scarf that Rachel Ray is wearing in a Dunkin Donuts ad.
Michelle Malkin is calling the scarf “hate couture” and wonders if people should start calling for a boycott of Dunkin Donuts.
Charles Johnson over at Little Green Footballs claims that Dunkin Donuts “…is the latest American firm to casually promote the symbol of Palestinian terrorism and the intifada, the kaffiyeh, via Rachael Ray.”
Malkin does, at least, give DD and Ray some wiggle room in saying that they might not realize just what Ray is wearing. Johnson doesn’t give them that any forgiveness promoting an “acknowledge, well-know symbol of terrorism.” But does at least back peddle enough to say that he wasn’t accusing them of having “terrorist ties.”
Personally, it looks like an ugly, black and white scarf. It doesn’t look like the head wear that Arafat always wore.
Now, this whole silly fuss did teach me one thing: a scarf can also be called a kaffiyeh and wearing it makes you in league with the terrorists. At least by those who see terrorist hiding in every nook and corner.
The kaffiyeh has been around for centuries. They’ve even been worn by British troops in the deserts of Africa during World War II. They’ve also been worn my U.S. troops in the Middle East to keep sand out of their nose and mouths.
Are these right wing bloggers going to fuss at our troops?
For that matter, are they going to fuss at Meghan McCain? It looks to me like she’s wearing what Malkin calls a “jihadi chic kaffiyeh.” Or is it that if Meghan McCain wears it then it’s just a scarf?
Personally, no matter who is wearing it, it’s just a scarf.

Oh good lord. Better run, it’s Rachel Ray, the great enemy of America! This just in… donuts are now the official breakfast food of terrorists everywhere. Tho really that would give the feds an excuse to finally raid coffee shops and arrest hippies.
5/27/2008, 11:44 amPlease tell me these people aren’t that stupid. *ugh*
Kris G. says:
Somebody needs to DETAIL their history lesson. The British and US soldiers may have worn a kaffiyeh but they won’t the color and pattern associated with the Palestinian terrorists. They were white or olive drab. That’s a BIG difference or distinction. I can wave a solid blue flag and it is still a flag, but if I wave a Confederate flag, then you will label me a Southern racist. It’s that standard black-and-white terroist pattern that is being specifically talked about.
5/28/2008, 12:48 pmToo many people are too naive about how smart and slick these terrorists and left-wing socialist can be….these are the people that will find out that the danger is sleeping right under their bed.
God Bless.

Rachel Ray’s scarf isn’t terrorism. Her cooking is.

Actually, Kris G., some of the people complaining are complaining about any type of keffiyeh, not just the “color and pattern associated with the Palestinian terrorists.” For example, Charles Johnson, of Little Green Footballs indicates that a red and white keffiyeh is a “symbol of Palestinian terrorism.” He has other examples that are blue and black and orange and black, each with different patterns. According to Johnson these are all symbols of Palestinian terrorism. For him, and others like him, it doesn’t matter what the color or pattern, it’s all the most vile of symbols.

5/28/2008, 8:52 pmPardon the caps, but good lord, she’s wearing a fricking scarf! Since when have we become so paranoid as a nation as to pick apart apart a CHEF’S WARDROBE in a DONUT COMMERCIAL and label her a TERRORIST SYMPATHIZER because she has QUESTIONABLE FASHION SENSE!?
Seriously! Just look at the above sentence and tell me it does not sound absolutely absurd!
Allana says:
Great, now scarves are taboo? I guess I’ll just go throw mine away. I’ve been reading way too much of this type of stuff. Something happens and a political party blows it WAY out of proportion. REally? A Scarf? Gimme a flipping break already. There are serious problems in this country, in this world and we’re worried about some stupid scarf? I’m scared for our country, really, I am.
5/28/2008, 10:11 pmSamuel says:
They’re definitely making a big deal over nothing. Unless Ray says she’s doing it to promote the Palestinian cause, I think the scarf looks substantially different (as far as I know) that any association is a stretch of the imagination.

There were actually calls for a boycott of Dunkin Donuts, that’s how warped this silly debate had become. I find it strange that people are willing to jeopardize an American company and its franchisees because a talking head was wearing a scarf that millions of people around the world have been wearing for two centuries at least.

It’s a well known fact that only terrorists like to keep their necks warm.
