When I read about our army giving weapons to Sunni insurgents earlier this week I was confused. After all, weren’t these the same people who were fighting and killing U.S. troops? Why would we want to help them kill more of our troops.

Apparently, a promise to use the weapons to fight Al Qaeda is enough to win over the commanders of our troops.

When I first read about this I thought of the saying “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” It turns out I wasn’t the only one. There is, however, a bit of a problem with this type of thinking. It ignores the fact that when your “enemy” is no longer around, your “friend” may revert back to being your enemy.

It turns out I wasn’t the only one to remember that saying in regards to this story. Jon Stewart over at The Daily Show had this very funny spin on the issue. Click on the picture below to be taken Crooks and Liars to see the clip of the show.

Don't I remember that we lent some support to Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war? We didn't like the Ayatollah.Confused

    Surely I remember wrong.

Actually, Jan, we provided arms to both sides in the Iran-Iraq war.

This is interesting reading on the subject:

Quite right, Laura. When I saw this on The Daily Show, I had two feelings. 1. It was pretty funny. 2. It was pretty scary.

yes this had me VERY confused.  What gives?  I'm sure they will turn on us in a month or 2.   Didn't we "help" the taliban years ago when the Russians were in Afghanistan?

So, now we're giving Sunni fighters guns and ammo.  And as far as I know, we're still not giving our troops sufficient vest, helmets, etc. to protect them from the (now increased amount of) bullets flying around Iraq.  But you know what we are giving our troops?  Playing cards with pictures and information about Iraq's archaeological history!  (source: http://www.thenewsroom.com/details/422388/US?c_id=wom-bc-klc)  Something is terribly, terribly wrong here.
