At best Gonzales is an incompetent fool, at worst he is a liar and has caused extensive damage to the Department of Justice.

Join me in signing a petition to impeach Alberto Gonzales. A vote of no confidence is not sufficient in this case.

Loyalty being the one trait Bush values in his cabinet members, Gonzales has been safe. However, this issue has not died down and has actually raised more questions…how can Gonzales continue as Attorney General?

This is a joke and just because the Democrats are pissed because they couldn’t do antyhting about the NSA deal they are drudging up a nonstory and attempting to embarrass Prersident Bush. The President of the United States has the ability to fire any of the US attorney anytime he choses and as a matter of fact Bill Clinton fire 92 US Attorneys when he took office in 1991, where was the outrage over that. The difference is, now the Democrats took control of the Congress and they are attempting to embarrass the Prrsident and right now this is the only way they can seem to find that just might work.

No laws were broken and the Democrats are on a witch hunt and Gonsalis is being crucified for nothing.

Jon, you’re right. The president can fire any politically appointed attorney at any time for any reason. If Gonzales (note how I spelled his name — not Gonsalis) and the Bush administration had simply said that they had fired these people because they wanted to we wouldn’t have this mess and this investigation on our hands. They didn’t do that, though. Instead they lied and said that the attorneys were fired because of poor job performance. Then they lied about that lie and then lied again, and again. During the testimony Gonzales has said that he had no idea who created the list and boy did he wish his second-in-command had more input into this whole thing because then it wouldn’t have happened. When McNulty resigned Gonzales story changed once again to it was all McNulty’s fault.

Combine the lies about the firings with the growing number of people from the DoJ taking the stand to say “I don’t remember” and you have a mess. Or maybe just immaculate firings.

By the way, Clinton didn’t lie about why he was firing those attorneys. The outrage is over the lies and the cover-up and the obstruction that this administration has been doing.

Oh, one more thing, the president can fire any politically appointed attorney they want. They can’t, however, use politics to hire or fire civil or career attorneys. What testimony that was not “I don’t remember” seems to indicate that politics may have been a factor in the hiring and firing of career or civil attorneys. That, dear Jon, is illegal.

Ahh, yeah, except Bush didn’t fire the Attorneys, Gonzales did. Bush won’t take responsibility for the firings (nothing new there). Gonzales doesn’t have the authority to fire Presidential appointees, but he did so anyways because the White House doesn’t want their fingerprints on this. They don’t want to be implicated along with Domenici and Wilson in obstructing justice. That’s why Rove still hasn’t turned over his emails.
