Can it really be called playing hooky if your boss/principal and everyone else knew you were taking the day off?

After my principal spent last week hinting that my position would be cut to the members of the budget committee and generally not speaking to me until the last hour of the last day that he could contractually discontinue my position, I was hating the idea of going to work on Monday. At one point I even figured out how many days I could take as sick leave and still get paid (63).

On Monday another teacher at my school who was shafted worse than I was told me that she was taking a day off this week for no other reason than she had the sick leave available and didn’t want to be at the school. That got me thinking so I looked at my meeting schedule and saw that I had no meetings today. I put in for a personal day 5 minutes later.

I didn’t get out of bed until nearly 11 this morning. It was wonderful not to have to worry about getting up and going into work where I am not happy.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of people at my school that I really love working with, however, the principal and his lack of respect for some groups is beginning to seep into the school’s culture. There are teachers and staff at that school that I used to like and respect who I now want to strangle because of their attitudes. As much as I don’t want to go in some days, I still do my job to the best of my ability. That includes being a team player and assisting where I’m needed.

So what are my plans for today? There only two things I have to do and everything else is just whatever interests me at any given moment. The two things I have to do are go to the bank for my mom and go to the doctor. I’ve been coughing for over a month and I can’t get rid of the cough.

It’s called a mental health day! and they are very very important for your overall health. SO… take a sick day, enjoy it.

Without mental health days at work, I think the homicide rate in the work place would be frightening.
