Is she nuts?

There are days when something happens in the world that just demands that I write about them. Days when anything else I was planning to write gets pushed aside just so I can say

What the hell?!?!

Lisa Nowak is an astronaut. Last July she flew into outer space on the space shuttle Discovery. During take off and re-entry back in July Nowak wore diapers. It’s actually a pretty standard procedure.

On Monday Nowak wore the diapers to make sure she didn’t have to waste time driving 12 hours from Texas to Orlando, Florida. Nowak was in a rush to meet Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman in a parking lot at the Orlando International Airport (OIA).

According to Nowak she did this to talk to Shipman about Navy Cmdr. Bill Oefelein. Nowak tried to convince Shipman to talk to her by spraying her with pepper spray.

When police arrested Nowak she was at a bus stop and a wig and a BB pistol were found in a nearby trash can. Nowak had with her a trench coat, a steel mallet, a folding knife with a 4 inch blade, 3 to 4 feet of rubber tubing and several large plastic garbage bags. Nowak allowed police to search her car where they found latex gloves, driving directions to OIA from Houston, e-mails from Shipman to Oefelein, a letter from Nowak proclaiming her love to Oefelien and daipers.

Nowak has been charged with attempted kidnapping, battery, attempted burglary of a car with battery and attempted murder. She was released late this afternoon on $25,000 bail and ordered to wear a GPS device on her ankle.

According to Michael Coates, director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Nowak has been placed on a 30-day leave and removed from flight status. — per CNN
