Gentry avoids trial

Back in August I wrote about Troy Lee Gentry being accused killing a tame bear in Minnesota.

Gentry avoided having to go to trial by pleading guilty to falsely registering a captive bear as being killed in the wild. The crime he plead guilty to is a misdemeanor.

According to USA Today

Under the plea, the 39-year-old country singer agreed to pay a $15,000 fine, give up hunting, fishing and trapping in Minnesota for five years, and forfeit both the bear's hide and the bow he used to shoot the animal in 2004. The bear, named "Cubby," was killed in a 3-acre private enclosure.

Gentry's hunting "guide," Lee Marvin Greenly, plead guilty to 2 felony charges involving helping others illegally shoot bears at baiting stations inside a national wildlife refuge. Greenly could spend up to 5 years in prison for each charge.

I categorized this post under Idiots and Rants for specific reason which are intertwined.

According to Gentry when he bought the bear from Greenly it was with the understanding that they duo would tape Gentry's "hunt" conducted inside an enclosure surrounded by an electrical fence. Gentry and Greenly also agreed that they would report the killing as taking place in the wild instead of on Greenly's property.

In court Gentry admitted to participating in the above events. In a prepared statement Gentry said

I relied on the experts around me for guidance, and I regret that today. Not so much because I was fined and punished, but because it appears that I don't have respect for the law. This has been a humbling experience for me, and one which I deeply regret.

Also

Gentry said he participated in improperly tagging the animal without realizing the seriousness of what he was doing.

"For that, I am truly sorry," he said.

Gentry is an idiot if he honestly expects people to believe that he didn't know that what he was doing was wrong. The mad admitted that the enclose was fenced in and that they were going to report the kill as happening at a different location. The fact that he was asked to agree to report the event happening at a location 6 miles away was a sure sign that something wasn't kosher about the activity.

No where in the printed portions of his statement does it appear that he is taking responsibility for his actions. If you have to lie about where it happened it is illegal. If you don't get that you're an idiot. I'm not even talking about the part where he and his "guide" think it's a "sport" to hunt a tame bear inside an electrified enclosure.

The "man" was lucky and he got off with a slap on the wrist. I hope his fans see him for the idiot, non-repentant, fool that he is.

He's not a "man," though. A man would know that claiming a bear was killed in a different location was wrong. For that matter, a man wouldn't consider killing a tame bear in a fenced in area sport.

This comment is off topic but this is one cool template!

I think that I would have liked to have seen him get mauled by the bear.

I have to agree with you on this one, these individuals are beyond idots and Mr. Gentry should have never been able to plead guilty of a misdemeanor and pay an insulting fine.

Next he can buy a barrel, stock it with fish and have target practice.

I hate it for the bear, there is a difference in hunting for food and hunting for trophy. This does not fit either one of the categories, this is animal abuse.

    cool template

That's disappointing news. I also posted about this last August. The problem is, animal cruelty isn't considered "serious" enough. A few days ago, there was a story about a guy who had a fight with his girlfriend and threw all four of her kittens into a fire. He was given a suspended sentence.

People like that need to spend a looong time behind bars getting beaten and sodomized until they learn something.

    End of rant.

Thanks. Ann over at Pixel forte (see sidebar) is responsible for the template.

Animal cruelty should rank higher because its is a precursor to cruelty to people.

What a moron Gentry is, too bad he did not get the severe enough punishment he deserved!
