Way back in during the Gulf War (1991), Dick Cheney said that going into Iraq and trying to put a new government in place would be a “quagmire.” What a difference a decade makes.

Actually, it doesn’t make much of a difference. The only difference is that now Cheney & friends think going into Iraq was a brilliant idea. They just can’t see the quagmire that Iraq has become.

Not only has it become a quagmire, but it has also helped to cause a crisis regarding the viability of a two party system in Washington! Both parties focus more on their own political power strugles than doing what is right for the nation.

Rumsfeld 6/30/2003: “I opened my remarks today about the United States of America. Were we in a quagmire for eight years? I would think not. We were in a process. We were in a — we were evolving from a monarchy into a democracy. What happened in Eastern Europe? Were they in a quagmire when the Berlin Wall fell down and they started struggling and working their way towards democracy?”

See? It’s not a quagmire; it’s merely a “long, hard, slog,” which according to Rumsfeld’s preferred dictionary means, “to hit or strike hard; to drive with blows; to assail violently.”

    See? We’re doing fine.

Is this similar to those famous flip flops that Bush and Co are against? Just like the Republicans were hopping mad over the Clinton semantics thing about sex the semantics of quagmire, civil war and or “stay the course”! What is the difference?
