Artie’s Home
Don’t worry, Jan, it’s good.
I got back from picking my dog up from the vet’s not too long ago. I had to take her in Monday evening so she could have surgery on her ear to clean up a hematoma the next day. She was supposed to come home yesterday but was having a bit too much oozing.
I got to visit with the vet for a bit before I took her home. Artie has to have a pad thing on her ear for the next 3 weeks. It’s for drainage. Otherwise she only has a very large collar on her head. She has on an Elizabethan collar to make sure she doesn’t rub her head on the ground and re-injure her ear. It will also protect her ear from any pissed off kitties that she gets too close to for their comfort.
Artie is still working out how to get around with the collar. She keeps running into the walls with it.
Tuesday the vet also took an x-ray of her back hips to see what was going on there. If you read about this last week you know that she fell when she was just trotting which is very unusual for her. According to the vet she has some mild changes typical with age in her left hip and mild/moderate changes in her right hip.
If you were to ask Artie though, she’s just a puppy and is doing fine.
When the vet showed me the film he said that Artie was a prime example that what’s on the film isn’t a good indicator of how a dog is doing. Based on her films, Artie should be slowing down a bit and not jumping around. He was telling me all of this while she jumped and down and went around and around trying to get me to pay more attention to her and take her straight home. If you didn’t know she was 8 nearly 9 years old you would think she was 8 or 9 months old.
The vet was actually very surprised by how hyper Artie was acting. He’s never seen her this hyper when she’s seen him before. I had to explain that it was because she hadn’t seen me for a bit. When I was told yesterday that I could come by and visit her I decided it wouldn’t be a good idea because I knew she would go ballistic jumping up and down. Even though I missed her I figured it would be cruel to go see her but not be able to take her home.
I’m going to take tomorrow off just to make sure that Artie does okay her first full day back from the vet’s. It’s not like I don’t have plenty of sick leave at my disposal. ![]()

Jan:
Thanks for the heads up that all went well.
I had to put the Elizabethan collar on the generic dog when she had to have a dewclaw removed. She still managed to chew through the bandage and reopen the wound. So it isn’t as foolproof as they told me.

That’s part of the reason I plan to stay home tomorrow. This way I can keep an eye on her for the next few days.
