Stupid bikers
Let me first say that this is not a sentiment I hold toward most bikers. I only hold this sentiment towards three bikers and the idiot women on the back of their motorcycles.
Not too long ago I left my house to go pick up a prescription at the pharmacy. After doing that I decided to drive for a few minutes before heading home. I've been having problems with either a pinched nerve or a strained muscle in my back and headaches for most of the week and I was feeling a bit better and just wanted to be away from the house with no errands to run for a bit.
I nearly ran into these bikers on my way home. Actually, one of them nearly ran into me.
I know that many if not most accidents between cars and bikes (any kind) are caused by the car driver not looking out for the other vehicles. I've always tried to watch out not only for other cars but also for bikes (motorized and pedeled), people, and animals when I drive. It's kept me from being in an accident more than once. Today was no exception.
As I was heading home I saw three motorcycles pull out of a car dealership to my left and cut quickly to the median of the road. I had just pulled past them when they pulled into traffic. At the time I was in the middle lane and the light only a building away had turned red. There was a car in front of me. Since the light was red I applied the brakes. I didn't slam on the brakes, just hit them like I usually do when I have plenty of room to brake.
As I applied the brakes to my car I looked in the rear view mirror. One of the three bikers had pulled right behind me but had not applied his brakes. Over my radio I heard the woman on the back scream. I immediately took my foot off the brake which caused my car to pull ahead a little and the biker cut into the next lane. Luckily for the biker, the person in the car that he cut in front of had already stopped their car.
All three bikers were trying to get from the car dealership on the left, across 3 lanes of traffic on the right, and to the right turn lane at the light. All this way in heavy traffic (there's some performance going on at the O-rena) with only a gas station's length from where they started to where they wanted to be.
That would be a stupid move to pull for anyone. Even more stupid for three bikers who were wearing helmets but whose girlfriends were not.
And what was up with that? The men driving the motorcycles had on the helmets. They're girlfriend passengers had no helmets. Tell you what, if I had a boyfriend that rode a motorcycle and he expected me to ride without a helmet so he could wear his, I'd say the love was gone from that relationship.

This weekend there's a massive biker rally about 20 miles from my house. Bikers are everywhere. I can really relate to this post. There are also two Harley Davidson plants in the area so there are a lot of people around here that are really immersed in the biker culture.
One thing to note about the helmet thing is that helmets need to be properly fitted to be effective. An unfitted helmet will help keep the skin on your head in a slide, but will not protect well against impacts. Perhaps the bikers you saw felt that one rider with proper protection was better than one rider with poor protection.
Additionally, a distressing number of biker babes won't wear helmets because it will mess with their hair more than the wind will.
Yeah, I don't understand that either.

Joefish,
Okay, I'll give you the helmets. I didn't realize they were fitted. And the girls did have big hair doos as well.
The bikers were still stupid to try to cross a 6 lane stretch of highway in only a building's length of space.
I'm about an hour from Daytona Beach so we get a lot of overflow from Bike Week. Those bikers are much better drivers.

I almost hit a biker dude a few months ago who suddenly emerged from my blind spot. My immediate reaction was to slam on my brakes just missing him. His immediate reaction was to flip me off and keep going. Considering the relative sizes of our vehicles, the whole episode struck me as being rather Darwinian.
