Members from my school will be participating in the Relay for Life event in Winter Park, Florida on March 25th. March 25th happens to be my birthday. This year, I will spend it helping to raise money for the American Cancer Society. If you’ve been reading this site a while, you probably know that my cousin Terri lost a brief, intense battle against cancer on August 15, 2005. This year I will be participating in the Relay for Life in her name.

Relay for Life is held every year by the American Cancer Society to help raise money to help prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish the suffering of those suffering from the disease. My school team and hundreds of others will be gathering in Winter Park to participate in this event. We will each take turns on the track walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. The relay lasts for 24 hours.

This event is a combination of activities and an outpouring of emotions – hope, unity, perseverance, and triumph for so many cancer survivors. It is also a tribute to the memories of those we have lost to cancer.

Every dollar I raise makes a difference to people whose lives are touched by cancer. Please help out by clicking on the Make a Donation at the bottom of this post.

Update:

I am no longer accepting donations here. If you still want to donate you can do so at the American Cancer Society website.

Winter Park, Florida…wasn’t there a restaurant there called the Bubble Room? Sheesh, it’s been so long but I remember they had cakes so big you’d need a crane to lift them.

    Sorry, I’m just reminiscing…

The Bubble Room is now Buca de Bepo or something like that. It was on the border between Winter Park and Maitland.

I also remember that if you went in on your birthday they would put a huge silly hat on your head. They put a stuffed bulldog on mine.

Hey I don’t know you or anything, found your site via blogmad but those post amazes me. My friend Andrea died at the age of 30 of breast cancer, and another one, Sandee who is currently fighting it. I hope one day soon to do Relay for life in honor/memory of both of them.

Last year I went to National Cancer Survivors Day and it was one of the most amazing times of my life. I released a butterfly for both Sandee and Andrea. I believe that even though Andrea didn’t physically survive it, spirtually she defeated the beast the day she was diagnosed. She never let anything get in the way of her life.

I would LOVE to make a donation if I could, but I have no money/ not really any job. I will be thinking about you and my heart will be in it. Sorry I can’t do more.

    Love, Mollie

I’ve been to Winter Park a few times though it’s been a while. I really like that area–so many little lakes and the Indians do their Spring training there, I think.

I’m sorry about Terri. Cancer research is what I do for a living and I work for an oncology surgeon so I see the results of cancer quite a bit. It’s a terrible thing.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I live in Jamaica (the country – not Queens) so I can’t participate. But you have my support.

    Great post.

Cancer sucks. I hate it, and will celebrate the day that it can no longer take the ones we love.

I think it is great that you keep the memory of your cousin. I wanted to let you know about our fundraiser if you need a program to help raise more money. You can go to http://www.olanmills.com and find out more. We help a lot of Relay for Life teams with fundraising. Keep up the good work in your area. I am sure you cousin is looking down and smiling.
